Usability Ain’t Everything – A Response to Jakob Nielsen’s iPad Usability Study

The conclusion of the Nielsen Norman Group’s April 2010 study of iPad usability is that it has problems and more standards are the solution. Yes, the iPad is imperfect, but resorting to standards as the solution is an antiquated reaction that fails to consider how interactive systems have evolved. We’re not Usability Engineers anymore (not most of us, anyway); we’re User Experience Designers. Experience is more than just usability.

iPad Usability: First Findings From User Testing

iPad apps are inconsistent and have low feature discoverability, with frequent user errors due to accidental gestures. An overly strong print metaphor and weird interaction styles cause further usability problems.

Good design’s about the details, but rarely do you get to see the designer’s mind chewing over the myriad decisions that produce something great. Which is why this video is awesome. It documents all of the adjustments that went into created the UI for their Convert application:

How the Tablet Will Change the World

Everyone who jammed into the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco on January 27, 2010, knew what they were there for: Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ introduction of a thin, always-on tablet device that would let people browse the Web, read books, send email, watch movies, and play games. It was also no surprise that the 1.5-pound iPad resembled an iPhone, right down to the single black button nestled below the bright 10-inch screen.

Useful Design Tips For Your iPad App

pps will define the iPad, it’s true. But in developing your app idea, which comes first, the idea or the device? Good news: neither. It’s people! When brainstorming and researching ideas for your app, step back and consider the context in which the device will be used by real live people. How does the iPad fit into our lives? In what situations would we prefer this device to a laptop or iPod Touch?

iPad apps for UX professionals

if you are a user experience professional and you do end up picking up a iPad, here are a few good apps you should consider checking out.

New Multi-touch Interactions on the Apple iPad

as a service to digital product designers everywhere, we took the time to extract 8 minutes of new user interface demos from the iPad keynote. Now you can quickly just catch the UI in action on Apple’s new native iPad and iWork applications.

Interesting iPad interactions

after combing through the keynote, I found a few new or extended interactions that are pretty interesting. Granted, some of these interactions may be extended to the iPhone and iPod Touch, but many are probably unique to the larger device format.

THE REAL COST OF APPLE PRODUCTS
Taking inflation into account, the folks over at VoucherCodes imagine how much it would cost to buy each of Apple’s new major product releases today. If you were an Apple fanboy in the 1980s and purchased the Apple Lisa, it would have cost you a massive $21,744.85 in 2010! That astounding figure turns out to be 43 times of the iPad, which cost $499 for its WiFi version. In other words, accounting for inflation you can buy 43 iPads for the same cost of Apple Lisa, which is touted as the “most expensive Apple personal computer ever”.

The Latest on the iPad: We're in Future Shock

Some thinkers have examined why there’s so much negativity about the iPad. The most compelling argument to me rests on one simple idea: The tech world is suffering future shock. The iPad brings so many capabilities together in one svelte package, resting on the demonstrably successful iTunes ecosystem, and at such a low price that it’s actually easier to rail against its supposed shortcomings than to exercise your brain and imagine the amazing uses that will emerge for the iPad over time.
